Creative like a Norwegian. They use rocks to expand municipalities
Millions of tons of rock from the construction of Rogfast are changing the map of Rogaland. Material excavated from a depth of 392 meters below sea level is being deposited in the waters around Kvitsøy, creating new land.
Rogaland is known for its rocky landscape.

Kvitsøy is located at the entrance to the Boknafjord. The municipality has 167 islands and fewer than 600 residents. Today, it is Norway's smallest municipality in terms of area. This may change as a result of the construction of the world's longest and deepest subsea road tunnel.
Rogfast will be 27 km long. The tunnel under the Boknafjord is scheduled to open in 2033. It should shorten the journey between Stavanger and Bergen by 40 minutes. The construction is already halfway done.

Two embankments with a total area of 130,000 square meters will be built on Kvitsøy. One will be designated for a public transport terminal. The other will be used for business activities. After the work is completed, the new land will be measured and reported to Kartverket.
On Kvitsøy alone, more than 100,000 truckloads of rock will be transported from the tunnel. One truck carries about 50 tons of material. One barge holds about 450 tons. It takes about nine trucks to fill one barge.

The undersea tunnel is changing island life
Rocks from Rogfast are being delivered to four municipalities in Rogaland. On Karmøy, they will be used to build the new Karmsund port, covering 100,000 square meters. Plans also include a 350-meter quay. In Bokn, a new island of about 30,000 square meters is to be created.
In Mekjarvik, Randaberg, a business area of 90,000 square meters is planned. There are also plans for a cruise port. Altogether, the new areas in the region will be equivalent to more than 50 football fields. Some higher-quality rocks may also be used for road construction.
The project is also changing everyday life on Kvitsøy. About 350 workers are employed on the island, which is more than half the number of residents. According to Norwegian media, the local Coop store is seeing more customers and more unfamiliar faces. Some residents are hoping for a life without having to rely on the ferry schedule.
