On March 23, before noon, the parties formally inaugurated this year’s negotiations. They concern the leading collective agreement that sets the wage level. The outcome of the talks will define the framework for other sectors. The deadline for reaching an agreement has been set for midnight on March 26.

The Leading Agreement Sets the Direction

The first agreement being negotiated is the collective labor agreement in the industry. The parties are the Norwegian industrial workers’ union and the Norwegian employers’ organization for industry. The agreed outcome forms the leading agreement. This sets the standard for subsequent agreements in the economy.

The parties are responsible for developing joint solutions. Union leader Christian Justnes pointed out the importance of the process. He emphasized the role of collective and constructive solutions. He noted that the negotiations may be challenging.

Demands and the Further Course of Talks

The trade union is demanding an improvement in workers’ purchasing power. It points to the employees’ contribution to value creation. Among the demands is also the advance payment of sick benefits by the employer. This concerns the period until the application is processed by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration.

The union is also calling for paid leave for visits with children up to 12 years old. This applies to doctor, dentist, and health clinic appointments. The employers’ organization has presented its own demands. Negotiations are being conducted by delegations from both sides.
If the parties do not reach an agreement by the deadline, the case will go to mediation. At that point, the mediation institution will take over the process. Decisions made in the coming days will affect subsequent agreements in Norway. At the same time, further stages of negotiations in other sectors are being prepared.
