You got sick in Poland and can't return to work in Norway? Do these 5 things
You are in Poland, supposed to return to work in Norway, but illness or injury prevents you from traveling? A Polish sick leave can be the basis for applying for Norwegian sykepenger, but the documents will not be sent to NAV automatically.
Only the employee's own illness entitles them to postpone their holiday.

In brief
- Inform your employer about your illness as soon as possible.
- Obtain a medical certificate in Poland.
- Prepare the NAV 08-09.06 form.
- Submit an application for sykepenger payment.
- Maintain contact with your employer and NAV.
The most important thing is to quickly inform your employer and provide the correct documents.
1. Inform your employer immediately
Do not wait until your planned return date. Write or call your employer and inform them:
- since when you are unable to work,
- until when the doctor has issued the sick leave,
- that the document was issued in Poland.
The right to benefit may be counted from the day the employer was informed about the illness, so it is worth keeping confirmation of the sent message.
2. Get a sick note from a doctor in Poland
The document should confirm that due to illness or injury you cannot perform your work. Check if it includes:
- Your personal details,
- Date of issue,
- Period of incapacity for work,
- Doctor's or clinic's details,
- Signature or electronic confirmation.
Keep a copy of the sick note. Do not assume that the Polish e-ZLA will be automatically sent to your Norwegian employer or NAV.
3. Prepare a statement for foreign sick leave
For sick leave issued outside Norway, you must attach the form:
Egenerklæring for utenlandske sykmeldinger. Not sure how to properly prepare the documents?
ORDER THE PREPARATION OF A STATEMENT FOR FOREIGN SICK LEAVE
4. Monitor your sykepenger application
A medical certificate alone is not yet an application for benefit payment. After the sick leave period ends, the proper sykepenger application may appear in your NAV account. You need to check, complete, and send it. As a rule, the deadline for submitting a sickness benefit application is three months. Also check messages from NAV. The office may request additional documents or information from your employer.
5. Do not break contact with your employer
Staying in Poland does not exempt you from obligations related to your sick leave. You still need to:
- respond to messages from your employer and NAV,
- provide further sick notes,
- inform about changes,
- participate in agreed activities related to returning to work.
Staying in Poland should not hinder your treatment or planned return to work.
Did you get sick during your holiday?
If your illness occurred during your official holiday, you can ask your employer to postpone the used holiday days. You will need a medical certificate confirming 100% incapacity for work. The request should be submitted to your employer as soon as possible after returning to work. If you were in Poland on rotation leave or taking overtime, do not automatically indicate that it was a holiday. Ferie, scheduled days off, and avspasering are settled differently.
Most common mistake: sending the document only to the employer
In the case of sick leave from Poland, you must follow the entire procedure:
- inform the employer,
- obtain a medical certificate,
- prepare the NAV 08-09.06 form,
- submit the documents to NAV,
- then apply for sykepenger payment.
Missing one document may delay the case processing.
