About one in three roadside interventions involving electric cars concerns issues with the starter battery. The report indicates that this situation also affects hybrid vehicles and those powered by fossil fuels. Up to three percent of cases are related to the complete discharge of the main battery in an electric vehicle.
Many people are unaware that electric cars have a 12V starter battery, similar to those in combustion vehicles. It powers electronics, heated steering wheels, and displays, even if the drive comes from the large battery pack.

During winter, with many short trips, this battery can become discharged. The key takeaway is that, even with an electric car, you should monitor and charge the 12V battery regularly.

Driving an Electric Car? Here’s What You Need to Remember

The method of charging the 12V battery may differ depending on the make and model of the electric vehicle. Usually, it is charged from the car’s main battery pack.

Most problems occur when the car is parked and not in use. Drivers should familiarize themselves with the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding charging and maintaining the health of both batteries.
