Fell ill in Poland but work in Norway? Find out what to do with your sick leave certificate
A sick leave certificate from a Polish doctor may provide grounds for applying for sickness benefit in Norway, but issuing it alone is not enough to receive payment. You must inform your employer and complete the formalities. Falling ill during your holiday also does not automatically mean that your days off will be rescheduled.
In your application to NAV, indicate truthfully whether you took holiday leave

Your return is planned, work is waiting, and the doctor determines that you cannot work. In addition to treatment, there is paperwork to deal with. Reporting your absence, submitting the sick leave certificate and applying for sickness benefit, known as sykepenger, are separate matters.
First, inform your employer
Let your employer know about your illness as soon as possible. Do not wait until the end of your sick leave or for a response from NAV. Submit the document confirming your incapacity for work and keep proof that it was sent.
You can submit a Polish sick leave certificate to NAV online
NAV recognises sick leave certificates issued by doctors in other European Economic Area countries, including Poland. This does not mean that sickness benefit will be granted automatically. You must still meet the eligibility requirements.
Do not assume that a Polish sick leave certificate will immediately appear in your NAV account. If it has not been entered into the system or you cannot use the service in Ditt sykefravær, submit a copy of the certificate to NAV and your employer. Also attach a self-declaration for a foreign sick leave certificate for NAV.
You must attach a declaration for a foreign sick leave certificate to your submission to NAV. You can find the form on NAV's website under the name “Egenerklæring for utenlandske sykmeldinger”.
When submitting documents through this route, attach a separate declaration for each sick leave period, including when the next certificate is a continuation of the previous one.
Do not confuse this document with an ordinary egenmelding. An egenmelding is a notification of illness to your employer without a doctor's certificate. Here, it means a form for a sick leave certificate that you already have.
NAV enters some foreign sick leave certificates into the system. If yours is already visible in Ditt sykefravær and you can log in, confirm it and follow the instructions for further processing. NAV describes this procedure in its information on foreign sick leave certificates.
If you choose to send the documents by post, the form must be printed, signed and mailed. Simply completing the printable version on the website does not mean that the document has been submitted to the authority. Before ordering a certified translation of all your documentation, find out what NAV or your employer actually needs. A sick leave certificate is not an application for payment
Submitting the sick leave certificate alone does not complete the formalities. When you use the sickness benefit application in Ditt sykefravær, you complete it after the relevant period has ended. For a longer period of sick leave, there may be several applications. Among other things, you state whether you worked and whether you took holiday leave.
As a rule, you have 3 months to submit the application. Therefore, do not wait until your entire treatment has ended. Details of the deadlines and how to submit applications can be found on NAV's sickness benefit page.
If NAV is to process your case, ask your employer whether they have submitted an inntektsmelding. This is information including details of your income, required to process the application. If it is missing, payment may be delayed even if you have already submitted your documents.
Ill during your holiday? An L4 certificate alone does not change its dates
NAV does not pay sickness benefit for days that you use as annual holiday leave. A sick leave certificate does not automatically turn them into sick days.
If you fall ill during your holiday and are completely unable to work, you can request that those days be rescheduled for later. You need a medical certificate confirming 100% incapacity for work. This right applies to statutory holiday days.
It is best to inform your employer straight away. A request to reschedule holiday leave, supported by a medical certificate, should be made as soon as possible after returning to work. These rules are stated by the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority, Arbeidstilsynet.
In your application to NAV, indicate truthfully whether you took holiday leave. If it was rescheduled, do not report those days as holiday leave taken. If it took place as planned, you must include it.
