Diesel and Petrol Lose Their Edge. The Biggest Leap in Years
Interest in electric cars in Norway has clearly increased. According to the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF), in April 2026, 51 percent of respondents declared that their next car would be electric. This is the biggest jump in several years.

In recent years, the percentage of people planning to buy an electric car remained around 45 percent. According to NAF, the trend had previously flattened out. In 2026, a change occurred. The organization links this to high fuel prices, uncertainty about energy access, and rising oil prices due to the war in the Middle East.
Electric Car Owners Are Decisive. EVs Are Gaining More Fans
Among people who already own an electric car, 82 percent declare that their next car will also be electric. That's 5 percentage points more than a year earlier. In 2026, 61 percent of this group strongly agreed with this choice. Another 21 percent chose the answer "agree."
NAF points out that electric car drivers are confident in their choice. Only 3 percent strongly disagree with the statement that their next car will be electric. 2 percent chose "disagree." 11 percent took a neutral stance. 3 percent answered "I don't know."

Diesel and Petrol in Norway? Combustion Cars on the Decline
Among owners of petrol and diesel cars, declarations are less clear-cut. Just over a third of this group are certain they will switch to an electric car with their next purchase. This is an increase of 3 percentage points compared to 2025. A quarter are still considering the decision.
In 2026, 17 percent of combustion car owners strongly agreed with the statement that their next car would be electric. The same percentage chose "agree." 24 percent indicated a neutral response. 17 percent were strongly opposed. 15 percent chose "disagree."
NAF compared the monthly costs of fuel and energy. For a diesel car with average mileage and fuel consumption, the cost is 1,300 NOK per month when a liter of fuel costs 20 NOK. At a price of 25 NOK per liter, it rises to 1,625 NOK. For an electric car with average mileage and energy consumption, charged exclusively at home under the Norgespris system, the monthly cost is estimated at 175 NOK.
