Car holidays in Norway will be more expensive. Electric cars will feel it the most
Electric car drivers in Norway will pay significantly more for tolls in the summer of 2026. The Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) warns that on many popular holiday routes, bills have doubled or more compared to 2022. This applies to round-trip car journeys, calculated with the AutoPASS discount.

About four out of ten people plan to take a car holiday this summer. According to a Norstat survey for NAF, the percentage is even higher among electric car drivers. This means a larger group of people who may see higher road charges after the holidays. NAF reminds that lower discounts for electric cars at tolls and the introduction of fees in more cities have increased the final cost of travel. For diesel cars, the changes are minor or non-existent on most routes.
Bills are rising. Discounts for electric car drivers are getting smaller
NAF compared tolls on routes between more than 20 popular destinations. The data show a sharp increase in costs for electric cars. On the Oslo - Trondheim route via Østerdalen, an electric car driver paid 51 NOK in 2022. In 2026, this is 324 NOK.
A similar increase is seen on the Oslo - Trondheim route via Gudbrandsdalen. The toll for an electric car there rose from 98 NOK to 395 NOK. On the Trondheim - Kristiansand route via Østerdalen and Oslo, the cost increased from 129 NOK to 500 NOK. NAF points out that the difference between diesel and electric cars has decreased, although electric cars are still cheaper at tolls.

AutoPASS helps. Fees need to be checked regularly
The lowest rates require an AutoPASS device. It automatically gives a 20 percent discount at all tolls and is necessary for drivers to receive the proper discount for electric cars. NAF states that an EV pays a maximum of 70 percent of the full rate. This is still less than a combustion engine car.
The organization also points out additional costs. Drivers should check if they have a tag in their car and whether they are paying a surcharge for the device. Some companies issuing toll devices charge a monthly fee. This can only be avoided by actively choosing a different contract.
The prices in the NAF comparison were taken on June 10. For all routes, the departure was set for June 17 at 10 a.m. The 2022 rates were adjusted to current money value, with a price increase of 12.16 percent according to the Norges Bank calculator.
