Unusual Contrast in Norway: Some Enjoy Sunshine, Others Brace for Storms
Northern Norway is experiencing unusually high temperatures. In many places, the sun is shining and the mercury is approaching 25 degrees Celsius. The situation is different in the south, where Østlandet and Vestlandet are dealing with rain, storms, and lightning.
Northern Norway was significantly warmer and sunnier on June 9.

The weather contrast is striking. According to NRK, almost all of northern Norway is enjoying very good conditions, except for increased cloudiness in eastern Finnmark. In Lofoten, the northern lights were visible over Hauklandsvannet during the night of June 8 to 9. This is a different picture than in the south, where forecasts predict rainfall, lower temperatures, and weather warnings.
Northern Norway Heats Up: Air Flows from the Continent
The warm weather is caused by atmospheric systems. On-duty meteorologist in Tromsø, Rebekka Stene, explained to NRK that a high-pressure system over the Barents Sea, northeast of Norway, is bringing warm air masses from the continent. Low-pressure activity in the south is also helping. As a result, the air stream is directed straight over northern Norway.
In several places, it has become very warm for early June in Northern Norway. During the interview with the meteorologist, 24 degrees were recorded in Bardufoss, 23 degrees in Evenes, and 20 degrees in Tromsø. Stene did not rule out further temperature increases in the afternoon. According to her, many places could gain a few more degrees on June 9, with a maximum around 2 p.m.

South Under Clouds: Rain and Thunder Expected
The situation is different in Vestlandet. In Bergen, the forecast for Tuesday was 13 degrees and 16 millimeters of rain. The weather is also unfavorable in Oslo. The capital was expected to see 9.8 millimeters of precipitation and 17 degrees.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (Meteorologisk institutt) issued a warning for Østlandet. It concerns thunderstorms with a high number of lightning strikes on Wednesday afternoon. This means further changes in conditions in the south of the country. The north will keep the warmth only for a short time.
On Wednesday, June 10, in the afternoon and evening, a front will move in from the south over Nordland, and later shift toward Troms. It will bring more clouds and precipitation, and by Thursday, temperatures in Nordland and Troms will drop to around 12–15 degrees. According to Stene, the front will not be wide, so after it passes, many places will be dry and fairly clear again, but noticeably cooler.
