The first steps have been taken on the Swedish side, where a company has been established to analyze the route and funding sources. The railway line is intended to connect Scandinavia's largest ski region with the international airport in Sälen.

The initiators assume that the tracks could be extended further into Norway. The goal is to create a permanent rail link between the two countries. The project authorities are counting on the participation of Norwegian partners.

Position of Norwegian local governments

On the Norwegian side, the municipality of Trysil has responded positively to the idea. Local authorities point to the potential significance of the investment for the region and the local economy. At the same time, they emphasize that the project does not fit the standard procedure for state budget funding.

The plan assumes the involvement of private investment funds and international resources. State financial support is not considered a condition for implementation.

Significance for security and defense

One of the arguments of the project's supporters is strengthening transport capacity for defense and crisis situations. Trysil and Sälen together offer about 100,000 accommodation places, which could be used in case of evacuation.

Representatives of the armed forces point to the importance of the railway for NATO troop mobility in the Nordic region. The rail connection could facilitate the organization of cross-border exercises and operations. These issues are being analyzed in dialogue between the defense and transport sectors.

Business doubts and lack of government decision

The project raises concerns among some business circles. The Norwegian Confederation of Enterprises from Innlandet points to potential benefits for business and logistics, but also highlights financial risks. According to the organization, the construction and subsequent maintenance of the line may require state funding.

The Norwegian Ministry of Transport reports that it is not yet familiar with the details of the initiative. It declares its readiness to review the project once specific analyses and documentation are presented.
