The contract includes detailed design and construction. Kystverket chose AF Gruppen as the general contractor, and the project covers a full tunnel for ship traffic along with all necessary installations. Physical work is scheduled to begin at the start of 2027. Construction will take about 5 years.

Ship Tunnel. The Scale of Investment in Norway is Impressive

The Stad tunnel will be 1,700 meters long. According to Kystverket, the tunnel opening will be about 20 times larger than in a road tunnel. The facility is being built for maritime traffic. It is intended to enable safe navigation past Stadlandet in Vestland county.

The tunnel will be used by large vessels. According to project information, these will be ships up to the size of Kystruten and Hurtigruten vessels. The tunnel will include all necessary installations. AF Gruppen is carrying out the project on behalf of Kystverket.

The Project Has Been Discussed for a Long Time. Now It's Time to Build

AF Gruppen worked on the project during the bidding phase. The consulting company Norconsult also participated, supporting the contractor in developing solutions for Kystverket. This was the stage preceding the actual construction work. Now the project is moving to the next phase.

AF Gruppen CEO Amund Tøftum emphasized that the contractor rarely has the opportunity to work on such a unique infrastructure project. He also pointed to local, national, and international interest in the investment. The company thanked Kystverket for their trust. AF Gruppen announces cooperation in the implementation of the task.
The Stad ship tunnel is to be built as a complete maritime corridor. The start date for construction work is set for early 2027. After completion, vessels will gain a new route through one of the most challenging sections of Norway's coastline.
