Exceptional Immigrants in Norway. They Bring Them Down from the Mountains to Build Roads

For years, Norway has employed Sherpas from Nepal to build mountain trails. The cooperation, which began in the early 21st century, remains ongoing even in 2026 and is an important element in maintaining tourist infrastructure in challenging terrain.

Norway develops and maintains an extensive network of tourist trails, especially in mountainous and fjord regions. Due to demanding terrain conditions and increasing tourist traffic, some of the work related to the construction and renovation of paths is entrusted to specialized teams from Nepal. Sherpas, known for their experience in high-altitude environments, are seasonally employed for these projects.

Sherpas in the Norwegian Mountains. Applying Their Knowledge

Sherpas have been working in Norway since around 2005. Their main task is to build stone paths and stairs that stabilize the ground and reduce erosion. The work is done by hand, using local materials, which allows the infrastructure to blend into the natural landscape. Their responsibilities include:
  • laying stone steps on steep sections of trails,
  • reinforcing existing tourist routes,
  • improving safety on popular routes,
  • limiting environmental degradation caused by intensive tourist traffic.
Hiring Sherpas is based on their many years of experience building trails in the Himalayas, where similar techniques are used in difficult terrain.

Projects in Norway

Sherpas from Nepal have participated in the construction and modernization of selected sections of popular trails in Norway, including areas such as Trolltunga, Preikestolen, and the Reinebringen route, where characteristic stone stairs have been built.

The Sherpa stone "stairs" have become a distinctive feature of many Norwegian trails. The projects are carried out in cooperation with local authorities and organizations responsible for tourism and environmental protection.

Sherpa Wages in Norway

Available publications indicate a very large difference between the incomes earned by Sherpas in Nepal and the wages they receive during seasonal work in Norway. One summer of trail construction can bring in more than the equivalent of 10 years' earnings in Nepal. Some sources report numbers three times higher.

The pay for a short period of work can equal several years' income in Nepal. In the context of earnings in their home country, where work on high-altitude expeditions usually brings in a few thousand dollars per season, employment in Norway is a significant source of seasonal income and is used to supplement household earnings.
Available materials confirm that Norway's cooperation with Nepalese Sherpas is ongoing. Teams are hired seasonally, mainly in the summer when weather conditions allow for fieldwork.

The infrastructure built by Sherpas remains in use and is systematically developed. This phenomenon is part of a broader context of international exchange of expertise in the tourism sector, where experience gained in high-mountain regions is applied in other parts of the world with similar terrain conditions.
