Winter temperatures put a heavy strain on electric cars. Although most models operate even at minus 40 degrees, drivers must expect shorter range and slower charging. Solutions that make battery operation easier in the cold become crucial.
The first factor affecting the behavior of an electric car in winter is the efficiency of the heat pump. It determines how much energy from the main battery goes to heating the cabin.

Another important element is the ability to preheat the battery before fast charging. Cold cells transfer less energy, and dense, frosty air increases driving resistance. Snow and slush further raise energy consumption.

The Role of the 12V Battery

In low temperatures, the small 12V battery is also important. In electric cars, it has an easier job than in combustion vehicles, but it can still struggle with many short trips. In such situations, it may not always have time to recharge from the main battery.

Heating the cabin, seats, and steering wheel can lower its voltage. That’s why specialists recommend regularly checking its condition in winter.

Winter Driving Habits

Winter conditions make good driving habits especially important. Preheating the cabin and battery while charging increases range and improves driving comfort. Avoiding fast charging at the start of a trip shortens waiting time, as a cold battery accepts energy much more slowly.

It’s also worth checking tire pressure, which can noticeably drop in the cold. Even a small decrease in pressure increases rolling resistance and thus energy consumption.

New Technologies Improve Winter Driving

Winter use of electric cars requires simple but systematic actions. Drivers who use battery preheating functions and take care of their vehicle can expect smoother driving in the cold.

Technological advancements mean that manufacturers are introducing more solutions to make winter travel easier. Thanks to these, modern models are increasingly better suited to cold Scandinavian roads.
