What about religion in the land of fjords? Here’s how many people participate in the life of the Church of Norway
More participants in church ceremonies
The number of church weddings increased. In 2025, over 7,000 couples were married in church, a 3 percent year-on-year increase. More than 33,300 young people took part in confirmation. The percentage of 15-year-old church members choosing confirmation rose from 80 to 82 percent.
More children were also baptized. In 2025, 28,393 people were baptized, which is 4 percent more than in 2024. The increase in baptisms was higher than the increase in births, which was 2.5 percent. At the same time, the share of baptized among all children born remains stable at around 51 percent.
In 2025, there were also nearly 36,000 church funerals, a slight decrease compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of people attending these ceremonies increased. The data indicates growing attendance at events marking important life moments.

Church services and cultural events attract participants
However, the total number of services was lower than the previous year. In 2025, there were about 1,300 fewer services. At the same time, attendance at individual services was higher. According to church authorities, the number of people attending weekday services is similar to 2019 levels, though still lower on Sundays and holidays.
Cultural events organized in churches are also attracting great interest. In 2025, 1.63 million people attended concerts and cultural events, an increase of over 2 percent compared to the previous year. The number of participants is only 86,000 lower than before the pandemic.
Den norske kirke reports that it is one of the largest employers of musicians in Norway. Events are organized in cooperation with local volunteers and artists. Many concerts are free or have low ticket prices. In many towns, churches also serve as local cultural venues.
