Unusual sight in Oslo. Military to patrol the streets

The Norwegian police will receive support from the military in guarding selected locations in Oslo. The decision applies from June until mid-August. The reason is additional tasks related to the current threat list.

The statement was published on June 12, 2026, by the Police Directorate (POD). The institution announced that the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvaret) have agreed to the request for assistance in securing selected points in the capital. The support will include, among other things, guard duty at the United States Embassy.

More tasks. Police under pressure in Oslo

The Oslo Police District (OPD) currently has more operational duties. The POD points out that the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine are contributing to an increased threat level. This changes the allocation of forces. More resources are now being directed towards security.

In summer, the workload increases. The OPD reports that as the season approaches, activity in the capital rises, and the number of tasks remains high. The police want to maintain their presence in the city, especially for preventive actions, sensitive areas, and work with youth.
The Police Directorate claims this will protect Norway's capital from shortages in security personnel.

Soldiers on guard. Support until August

Police Directorate Director Håkon Skulstad stated that the request for support was necessary. According to him, without assistance, the police would have to limit other important tasks, including prevention and field presence. Skulstad emphasized that operations should continue as much as possible during the summer.

Forsvaret personnel will work together with Oslo police teams. The guard duty will cover selected locations, including the United States Embassy. Skulstad noted that the capital has its own challenges and many facilities requiring protection. He added that sending help from neighboring police districts would shift the burden to other regions.
Military support is to remain in place until mid-August. The police note that the presence of soldiers in front of buildings in Oslo may be unusual. According to Skulstad, this is a consequence of the international situation, which also affects the capitals of Western countries.
