Russian missile over Poland? Norway warns of threat to all of Europe
A cruise missile fell on Polish territory near the Ukrainian border on Thursday, July 30. Norwegian security experts emphasize that the significance of the incident depends primarily on whether the violation of Polish airspace was intentional. According to them, the findings may influence the further response of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the way the eastern border of Europe is protected.
A joint press conference was held in Lublin Voivodeship with the services, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and the heads of the Ministry of National Defence and Ministry of the Interior and Administration.

An unidentified object entered Poland from the Ukrainian side on July 30 around 3:40 a.m. Polish forces dispatched an F-16 fighter jet to identify the object and, if necessary, intercept it. After six minutes, the target disappeared from radar. Shortly after, in Tarnawa-Kolonia in the east of the country, a crater about ten meters in diameter and scattered debris were found. On July 31, investigators confirmed that the missile was a Kh-101. It was manufactured in the second quarter of 2026 in the Moscow region.
Norwegians analyze intentions. The missile's route will be crucial
Tom Røseth, chief intelligence lecturer at the Norwegian Defence Academy (FHS), described the incident as a clear violation of Polish airspace. He told Nettavisen that the scale of the response should depend on how long the missile was over Poland and how deep it penetrated NATO territory. According to Røseth, the most serious scenario assumes that the missile was deliberately directed towards Poland. Such a scenario would require proof of Russian intent.
The expert also pointed to the possibility of navigation system interference. However, he considered this less likely in the case of the Kh-101 missile, as this type of weapon is equipped with modernized solutions that limit the effectiveness of jamming. In his opinion, the impact of electronic warfare cannot be completely ruled out. Røseth also presented another possibility, according to which the route may have been planned to avoid Ukrainian air defense. This would mean a deliberate flight through or very close to Polish airspace.

NATO may change the rules. Europe strengthens air defense
Røseth recalled that Russian drones had previously appeared over Poland. At that time, NATO and Polish authorities mainly responded with political and diplomatic measures, as it was unclear whether the violations were intentional. The new incident may affect that assessment. The Norwegian expert believes that if a planned route is confirmed, NATO should consider shooting down Russian objects approaching Polish airspace. He also emphasized the importance of further strengthening Ukrainian air defense.

European Council President António Costa considered the violation of Polish airspace a threat to the security of all of Europe. He also announced increased European Union (EU) support for Ukrainian air defense. On the night of July 30, Russia launched dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones against Ukraine, and one of the detected objects flew about five kilometers from the Polish border.
