Norwegians reveal how much they will spend on Christmas. This is how they plan their gift budgets

Only 5 percent of Norwegians declare that they will spend more on Christmas gifts in 2025 than the previous year. The survey shows that 28 percent are cutting back on spending, while 67 percent are keeping it at the same level. The results indicate a stable approach among Norwegians to planning their holiday budgets.

The data comes from the Frendeundersøkelsen survey conducted by Norstat. Nearly one third of respondents declare that in 2025 they will allocate less money for gifts than in the previous season.

The highest number of people increasing their spending was recorded in Finnmark, where 16 percent of respondents reported an increase. In Oslo, this figure is 10 percent, and in Agder, 8 percent. In the Troms and Møre og Romsdal regions, no increase in gift spending was noted.

Regional differences visible in the data

Among the regions where the most people are spending less on gifts, Møre og Romsdal leads with 37 percent. Next are Innlandet with 34 percent, and Vestfold, Østfold, Nordland, and Trøndelag, where 33 percent of respondents are cutting their budgets.

In Oslo, 22 percent report a decrease in spending. The lowest percentage of such responses was recorded in Telemark, at 19 percent.

Where spending is most often limited

The Norwegian Confederation of Enterprise (NHO Service og Handel) forecasts an increase in total Christmas spending nationwide.

The organization estimates that the average Norwegian will spend about NOK 26,500 on Christmas this year. This represents a 5 percent increase compared to last year. The forecasts take into account the ongoing rise in inflation.

Retail forecasts indicate growth

Survey data and retail forecasts show varied consumer behavior. Some households are cutting back, while others are maintaining their spending levels.

At the same time, the total value of Christmas shopping is expected to rise. This pattern indicates a change in the structure of spending, rather than a uniform trend among all consumers.
