Norwegian party wants US troops withdrawn from the country. "A security threat"

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre did not use the word "condemn" when referring to the US attack on Venezuela. In an interview with NRK, he stated that Norway considers the US actions a breach of international law.

He stressed that violating this law is a serious matter. His statement sparked reactions from opposition parties. The issue quickly became a topic of debate among Storting politicians.

Red Party wants to terminate military agreements

Former Red Party leader Bjørnar Moxnes stated that the presence of 12 American military units in Norway poses a threat to the country's security. According to him, the US has full operational control there.

Moxnes announced that his party wants to reopen the debate on the agreements. The Reds believe that the agreements can be terminated. They are demanding the withdrawal of American soldiers from Norway.

SV and MDG call for a clear stance

SV and MDG also criticize the lack of a clear response from the Prime Minister. SV leader Kirsti Bergstø stated that an attack on a sovereign state cannot be accepted. In her opinion, Norway should reduce its dependence on the US in security policy.

A similar position was presented by MDG leader Arild Hermstad. The politicians point to the need for closer European cooperation.

Official response from Norwegian authorities

The US attack took place on January 3 and ended with the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He is currently in American custody.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs assures that the government's position on the violation of international law has been clearly communicated. The ministry also announced it would address the allegations regarding the American military presence in Norway.
