The Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) reported that the oral part was the most popular. 9,311 people took this section. Norskprøven is a state exam that tests Norwegian language proficiency. HK-dir states that the test covers reading, listening, writing, and oral communication.
The Exam Was Large-Scale. The Oral Part Dominated
The May session was the largest in 2026. A total of 11,107 candidates took at least one part of the exam. One person could take more than one section, so the numbers for each part do not add up to the overall number of candidates.
The oral part was chosen by the most people—9,311. The written part was taken by 6,545 people, and the reading part by 6,096. HK-dir also reported that 5,900 candidates took the listening part. Among those with registered gender, 61.3% were women and 38.7% were men.

Results Matter. Candidates Await Before Autumn
The director of Norwegian language exams at HK-dir, Sissel Mehammer, pointed out that norskprøven is an important milestone for many people. The results are used when applying for university places, jobs, residence permits, or citizenship. The exam therefore has practical applications and can influence further educational and career decisions.
Results are given in levels from A1 to B2. A1 means beginner level. B2 applies to people who understand complex or academic texts and can write clear, detailed statements. Mehammer said that results will be published in time before the autumn start of studies and possible job changes after the holidays.
The exams were held at centers across the country. The highest number of candidates was in Oslo, with 2,195 people recorded. Municipalities can organize norskprøven up to four times a year.
