Norway breaks record. This is the first time in history
The spring of 2026 was the warmest in Norway since meteorological measurements began. The average temperature for the entire country was 2.1 degrees higher than the norm for the current climate. This record result was mainly due to exceptionally warm March and April.

The current climate is based on the reference period 1991–2020. The previous record belonged to the spring of 2024. Spring 2025 was then second. With the latest data, it has now dropped to third place. According to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, May in the continental part of the country was close to the norm.
Spring in Norway. March and April sealed the record
March was record-breakingly warm throughout Norway. The previous record from 2012 was beaten by 0.6 degrees. New records were set at 111 stations, some of which have over a 100-year history of measurements.
April was the second warmest in the history of measurements. The same result was recorded in 2019. Only April 2011 was warmer. In some parts of Vestland, Rogaland, and Agder, the whole spring was close to the norm. The record-breaking measurements were due to other, mainly northern, areas of the fjord country.

It's all because of the north. These regions raise the average temperature
Northern Norway had the biggest impact on the result. In Nordland and Finnmark, some stations were 3 to 4 degrees above the norm. This is a high difference for a three-month average. Many places also recorded earlier signs of spring.
On Svalbard, the entire month of April was warmer than the norm. Every day, the temperature exceeded the level typical for the current climate. On some days, the difference was five to six degrees. The record for the warmest spring was set at the Hopen, Svalbard lufthavn, Ny-Ålesund, and Jan Mayen stations.
The highest temperature of the season was recorded at Kongsberg brannstasjon in Buskerud. On April 30, it was 26.5 degrees there. Since 1957, only once has the highest spring temperature occurred in April. That was in 2015. In Finnmarksvidda, several stations recorded a spring with an average temperature above 0 degrees for the first time.
