Too many drivers reach for their phones while driving, which is illegal and carries heavy fines. At the same time, it poses a serious threat to life. New cameras can significantly increase the detection of such violations.

New possibilities for road cameras. Will the technology come to Norway?

The technology was developed in Australia. The system is already used in parts of England and the USA. The cameras detect not only speeding but also record not wearing seat belts and using a phone while driving. They can be installed permanently or moved between locations.

The angle of the device allows it to capture a phone even when held on the driver's lap. This increases the effectiveness of inspections. Current speed cameras in Norway can only measure speed, as required by current regulations. The new solution significantly expands the range of detectable offenses.

Problems with enforcing regulations

Currently, Norwegian police have difficulties proving illegal phone use. Inspections require significant resources and are often ineffective. The new technology could ease the burden on the authorities. Trygg Trafikk (the road safety organization) points out the need to test it in Norway.

Every year, more than 100 people die in road accidents. One of the causes is the so-called lack of information gathering by the driver. This means situations where other factors have been ruled out and the driver's lack of attention is indicated. Using a phone falls into this problem. It may be responsible for more incidents than statistics show.
Current regulations do not allow the use of such cameras except for speed measurement. Trygg Trafikk is calling for rapid legal changes. The organization points out that the solution is already working in other countries.
