New data from Agria Dyreforsikring (a company offering pet insurance) shows a growing interest among Norwegians in mixed-breed dogs. According to the latest survey, 23 percent of Norwegian dog owners have a dog of this type.
Cavapoo, labradoodle, and pomchi are names of popular mixes that are increasingly appearing in Norwegian families. The survey shows that the main reason for choosing such a dog is its appearance.

However, Agria reminds that the decision to get a dog affects the whole family’s life for many years. The organization emphasizes that future owners should learn about the characteristics of different breeds before making a choice.

Varied traits of mixed breeds

Mixing two breeds can lead to a wide range of traits. A Goldendoodle may combine the temperament of a golden retriever with the lively nature of a poodle.

Some dogs inherit characteristics from both breeds equally, while others show a clear dominance of one. Agria points out that a future owner must accept any of these possibilities before making a purchase.

Health and costs when choosing a dog

The study shows that 34 percent of owners choose mixed breeds because they believe they are healthier. However, Agria emphasizes that even mixed breeds can get sick, and there is no guarantee of healthy litters when crossing breeds.

If both parent breeds have numerous health problems, puppies may inherit them from both sides. Another 18 percent of respondents cite a lower purchase price as a reason for choosing a mixed breed. Purebred dog breeders incur higher costs related to registration with kennel clubs.

Responsible choice of a new pet

Mixed-breed dogs can be either cheaper or more expensive than purebreds. Agria highlights the importance of choosing a responsible breeder. It recommends visiting the breeding facility, getting to know the conditions, and seeing both puppy parents. At the same time, it reminds future owners to consider the costs of care, activity, and possible treatment for the dog over many years.

Agria encourages future owners to prepare thoroughly before purchasing a new pet. Proper preparation can ensure that choosing a dog—whether mixed-breed or purebred—becomes a conscious decision for years to come.
