Tragic data from Norway. May was the worst month
May was so far the deadliest month of 2026 on Norwegian roads. Nine people died in head-on collisions. Heavy vehicles were involved in six fatal accidents, resulting in a total of nine deaths.
Trygg Trafikk points to recurring causes of accidents: excessive speed for the conditions, driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants, and driver inattention.

Will it only get worse? Summer is the most dangerous time on the roads
June marks the beginning of the period with the highest number of fatal accidents. According to Tanja Loftsgarden from Trygg Trafikk, the most serious accidents occur more often in the summer. There are more travelers on the roads, sharing them with people commuting to work every day.
In summer, drivers tend to drive faster. Good road conditions can encourage higher speeds. However, higher speed increases the risk of serious injury or even death. In 2025, 50 percent more people died in summer traffic than during the rest of the year.
Trygg Trafikk urges people to plan their journeys with extra time. The organization points out that summer traffic can cause delays. This also applies to drivers going on vacation and using ferries. Loftsgarden emphasizes that in such situations, it's better to avoid rushing and not take unnecessary risks.
