The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has published preliminary data on road accidents. According to the data, April saw a clear increase in the number of fatalities. All fatal incidents this month occurred in Østlandet. With the arrival of spring, traffic intensity increases. More road users appear, including vulnerable ones.
Spring Increase in Road Risk
Spring weather encourages travel and outdoor activities. More motorcyclists and cyclists appear on the roads. In April, one motorcyclist and one cyclist died in southern Norway. Increased traffic means a higher risk of serious accidents. Drivers often increase their speed as conditions improve.
Most of the victims were young men aged 20–30. Four people died in passenger cars. Almost all the victims were men. One of the victims was a woman around 80 years old. Guro Ranes, a representative of the Public Roads Administration, points out that such incidents have serious social consequences.

Most Common Causes and Locations of Incidents
The most dangerous are accidents involving vehicles running off the road. These are often accompanied by excessive speed. In spring, road conditions change dynamically. This requires greater concentration from drivers. It is important to adjust speed to conditions, visibility, and traffic intensity.
Fatal accidents in April occurred in Østfold, Buskerud, Akershus, and Innlandet. Two incidents were recorded in Akershus and two in Innlandet. Five out of six accidents happened on regional roads.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration urges caution during periods of increased traffic. It recommends avoiding the use of phones and other distractions while driving. It points out the need to take breaks on longer journeys. It emphasizes the importance of wearing seat belts and properly securing passengers. Motorcyclists and cyclists should use helmets and visible clothing. Attention is also drawn to driving without alcohol and to the small margins for error that can lead to serious consequences.
