Can a neighbor forbid me from grilling? This is what Norwegian regulations say
The grilling season has returned along with good weather. The Norwegian Association of Housing Cooperatives (NBBL) reminds that smoke, smell, and noise can be problematic for neighbors. Grilling is therefore not always just a private decision.
Can you grill anywhere and at any time in Norway?

Line Bjerkek, a lawyer at NBBL, points out that several laws require taking neighbors' interests into account. This includes regulations concerning housing cooperatives, associations, and neighborly relations, although none of these explicitly mention grilling. The rule is simple: residents should not cause inconvenience to others.
Grilling on the balcony. Regulations matter
Many cooperatives and associations have their own rules. NBBL states that these may specify where grilling is allowed, what types of grills are permitted, and during which hours shared spaces can be used. This reduces the risk of disputes and provides residents with clear guidelines.
Bjerkek draws attention to charcoal grills. According to her, using them on balconies can cause more smoke and increase the risk of fire, especially in wooden buildings. Gas and electric grills are considered safer options. Such solutions are more often included in building regulations.

Common areas in Norwegian homes. Clear rules are needed
Many buildings have shared rooftop terraces, courtyards, or other meeting places. NBBL points out that guests can be hosted there, but residents must consider their neighbors' needs. Noise can be a problem, as can smoke and leftover mess.
Bjerkek recommends simple rules for common areas. These can specify grilling locations, quiet hours, and who is responsible for cleaning up after gatherings. Some cooperatives and associations also introduce reservations for certain common areas for birthdays or other events. This way, other residents can still use the terrace on the same day.
NBBL separately warns against disposable grills. According to Bjerkek, they should not be allowed in common areas located on or near buildings. Such grills can cause fires even after grilling is finished.
