A Space Storm Is Approaching. Norwegians Prepare for a Sky Spectacle

An exceptionally strong aurora borealis will appear over Norway and far to the south of Europe. This is the result of a series of powerful explosions on the Sun, which have sent massive amounts of heated gas toward Earth. Scientists warn that the phenomenon may be accompanied by disruptions in the operation of navigation devices.

Astrophysicist Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard reported that dense clouds of gas will reach Earth on November 12 and 13, 2025. According to his forecasts, several of them may merge just before reaching Earth's atmosphere, further intensifying the effect.

This means there is a possibility of an exceptionally intense aurora borealis, visible even in the southern parts of Europe. Ødegaard emphasized that, in addition to the extraordinary light show, there may be disruptions in the functioning of communication and navigation systems.

The Strongest Explosion in Years

On Tuesday, an X5-class explosion was recorded on the Sun, belonging to the highest category of X-ray radiation. As a result, a strong proton storm was generated, which reached Earth almost immediately.

This phenomenon caused a so-called ground-level event, during which radiation reaches the planet's surface. Such situations are extremely rare—on average, they occur once per solar cycle.

Merged Gas Clouds May Intensify the Effect

According to Ødegaard, three gas clouds moving at several million kilometers per hour may merge and strengthen their impact. Similar phenomena have already been recorded in the past year, resulting in auroras visible far to the south of the continent. If the situation repeats, sky watchers can expect one of the most powerful light shows in many years.

Record Solar Activity

Solar activity has now reached its highest level in 22 years. Experts predict that the strength of the magnetic storm will reach G3–G4 on a five-point scale, and on the Kp scale—a value of 8 out of a maximum of 9 points.

However, Ødegaard notes that such phenomena are difficult to predict, and the actual level of activity may turn out to be either higher or somewhat weaker.
