Starting December 2, a new identification system will be introduced in Norway for residents from EU, EEA, and EFTA countries. The new Norwegian identity cards will also be available to Poles. The document will contain biometric data and be linked to the Norwegian population register. Authorities hope this solution will reduce fraud and streamline everyday formalities.
The introduction of Norwegian identity documents is intended to increase data security. The police point out that their goal is to make fraud, including identity theft, more difficult.

Until now, foreign IDs and passports have often been difficult to verify in Norwegian institutions. The new system is set to change that. Its operation is based on integration with the national population register.

Biometric data and easier verification

According to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), the documents will contain biometric data. This solution is intended to make it easier to confirm identity in banks and offices. Authorities emphasize that this will reduce the risk of impersonation.

As a result, access to public services will be more controlled. The system is also expected to improve service in institutions that have previously had trouble accepting foreign documents.

Facilitations in everyday activities

The new IDs will be available to citizens of European Union countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. The documents will not serve as travel documents and will not allow border crossing. Their role is limited to identification within Norway.

Authorities hope they will simplify procedures related to opening bank accounts or using pharmacy services. They are also expected to reduce cases of stolen documents being used, which previously ended up on the darknet.

What does the new solution mean for residents of Norway?

The implementation of the new system is expected to gradually change the way residents use Norwegian services. Public and private institutions will be able to verify data more quickly, which will improve service efficiency. The process of issuing documents will cover a wide group of foreign residents.

Norway announces further work on modernizing identification systems. The solution is ultimately intended to strengthen stability and transparency in everyday administrative processes.
