Stavanger, the southwestern gateway to the Norwegian fjords, boasts a very picturesque Old Town. The small wooden houses along narrow streets right by the inner port area were in the 1950's threatened by urban renewal. That process was stopped and we can now fully appreciate that effort. "Gamle Stavanger" now has the largest surviving wooden house settlement in northern Europe.

Stavanger, den sør-vestlige inngangsporten til Fjord-Norge, kan skryte av en meget severdig Gamleby. De små trehusene langs smale gater og smau like opp fra Vågen var på 1950-tallet truet av forsøk på byfornyelse. Den prosessen ble stoppet og vi kan i dag fullt ut høste fruktene av den innsatsen ildsjelene la for dagen den gang. Gamle Stavanger utgjør den største trehusbebyggelsen i Nord-Europa.
