What is the Norwegian Tax Office 'hunting' for? The most common mistakes in Skattemelding

Tax season in Norway is a time of great hope for a high refund for many Poles, but also a period of considerable stress. Skatteetaten (the Norwegian Tax Office) has increasingly advanced systems for automatic data verification each year. What used to 'pass' a few years ago now almost instantly triggers a red flag in the system.

Instead of copying generic guides, we have prepared a list of real traps that controllers will pay special attention to in 2026. Check if your tax return is safe.

The 'automatic' commuter trap

Many taxpayers assume that since they were entitled to commuter status (pendler) last year, it will be automatically included in the 2026 Skattemelding. This is a mistake.

The tax office often removes these deductions from the pre-filled return, forcing you to prove again that your life situation has not changed.

What to watch out for?
Skatteetaten is increasingly asking for evidence of 'regular visits' to Poland. If you travel by car, prepare fuel receipts or toll payments (AutoPASS). If you fly – keep your boarding passes.

Critical error:
Not distinguishing between a single commuter and one with a family. In 2026, the documentation requirements for single individuals are even more stringent.

Questioning meal expenses (per diems)

This is the most frequently checked item. Remember, the deduction for meals (per diems) is only available if you do not have the ability to prepare meals at your place of residence in Norway or if you live in a barrack/hotel, and it only applies to expenses you actually incur!

Important:
The tax office checks the standard of your accommodation in Norway based on registration in the Folkeregisteret and your rental agreement. If you rent an apartment with a full kitchen or receive a food allowance as part of your salary, claiming per diems without a very strong justification is almost a guaranteed invitation for an audit.

Forgotten account in Poland and 'hidden assets'

Norway has a very efficient tax information exchange system with Poland. If you have savings in Poland exceeding the wealth tax threshold (Formueskatt), you must declare them in your Norwegian tax return.

Risk:
Skatteetaten has access to foreign bank accounts. If you do not declare the funds that appear there, the tax office may consider it an attempt to conceal assets, which results in a penalty tax (tilleggsskatt) of 20% to even 40% of the due tax.

Parental deduction (Foreldrefradrag) – money we forget about

This is one of the most commonly overlooked deductions by Poles. If your children live in Poland and attend kindergarten, nursery, or paid extracurricular activities (e.g., sports or arts), you can deduct these costs from your Norwegian tax!
Condition:
You must have invoices issued in your name and payment confirmations documenting these expenses.
