Tourists Flood Norwegian City. Politicians Call for Limits

Nearly 13,000 cruise ship passengers are expected to disembark in Ålesund in a single day. The Green Party wants to set a daily limit of 8,000 tourists to protect residents. However, city authorities are pointing to other solutions.

On Wednesday morning, May 20, two cruise ships were already docked at the Ålesund waterfront. A third was expected to arrive later. In total, there were nearly 13,000 tourists on board. Some set off on excursions, while others headed to the city center.

Ålesund Under Pressure from Cruise Ships. This Is What Tourism Looks Like in the City

Eddy and Wilma Vos from the Netherlands were surprised by the scale of the crowds, as they told NRK. They came to Norway on a cruise ship. After disembarking, they wanted to see the everyday life of the city. Instead of taking a tourist bus, they planned to use regular public transport.

For some local businesses, this influx means higher turnover. Sarah Soumilas, owner of Racoon café, says tourists are important for her business. According to her, the presence of visitors helps keep the business running. In the city center, shops, streets, and venues quickly fill up with passengers.

The City Expected to Profit. Problems Have Emerged

The Green Party believes that Ålesund needs a limit on the number of tourists. The party proposes 8,000 people per day. Jonas Maas Nilsen from the party emphasizes that this is not about opposing tourism. According to him, the problem is the number of people arriving at the same time.

In the background of the dispute is an analysis of the city's capacity. It shows that Ålesund reaches its tolerance threshold on days with the highest influx of tourists. The Greens point to pollution, emergency service readiness, difficulties in getting around, and comfort in the city center. Nilsen asks whether the city should primarily be a place for residents to live, or a space filled with tourist buses and souvenir shops.
According to municipal data, Ålesund will have six days this summer with more than 13,000 tourists at once and 31 days with over 8,000. Mayor Håkon Lykkebø Strand (Progress Party) rejects the idea of a limit and wants to fund infrastructure improvements with a visitor fee. After a February analysis, the port installed toilets in the city park and allocated NOK 300,000 for new signage for tourists. Another analysis is expected in spring 2027.
