Norwegian authorities have confirmed three cases of Russian aircraft violating Norwegian airspace in 2025, as announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Two incidents occurred over waters northeast of Vardø, and the third over an uninhabited area near the land border in Øst-Finnmark.
The first incident was recorded on April 25, when a Russian SU-24 flew through Norwegian airspace for four minutes. The second case occurred on July 24 and involved an L410 Turbolet aircraft, which remained in Norwegian airspace for three minutes. The third incident happened on August 18, when an SU-33 violated the airspace for one minute.

Norway demands explanations from Russia

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre described the incidents as matters taken very seriously. At the same time, it was noted that it cannot be unequivocally determined whether the violations were intentional or the result of navigational errors.

Norwegian authorities stated that they have requested explanations from the Russian side regarding the circumstances of each incident. It was also reported that the parliament was appropriately informed, and data about the incidents were shared with allies.

Joint NATO statement targeting Russia

Norway joined a North Atlantic Alliance statement condemning the violation of Estonian airspace on September 19. In the same context, similar incidents recorded in Poland and Romania were mentioned.

NATO communications emphasized that these matters are being considered in the context of a serious security situation in the region. The information presented concerns confirmed incidents and does not include a broader assessment of the motivations of the Russian military.

Norwegian authorities point out that this year's incidents occurred after more than a decade without such cases in Norwegian airspace. They also admit that they continue to press for communication from Russia to avoid misunderstandings in the future.
