An international military operation under Norwegian command has begun in southeastern Poland, aimed at training Ukrainian soldiers. The initiative, called Operation Legio, is taking place in a specially constructed camp, Camp Jomsborg. For Norway, this is the first international operation of its kind conducted outside the country's borders.
The training is highly realistic, replicating battlefield conditions, including explosions and smoke. Ukrainian soldiers, arriving directly from the front lines, are learning tactics, trench warfare, and drone operation. The course program is developed in close cooperation with the Ukrainian side, which defines its most urgent needs.

A key element is learning how to cope with combat stress, which is intended to directly increase survivability on the front. The location in Poland guarantees safety, protecting participants from Russian missile and drone attacks.

Joint Operation of Poland with Nordic and Baltic Countries

Operation Legio is multinational and, in addition to Norway, includes all Nordic countries, the Baltic states, and Poland. The cooperation brings mutual benefits, as not only Ukrainians gain new skills. Norwegian instructors obtain unique knowledge about modern warfare directly from soldiers with combat experience.

These experiences are then used to improve and develop the Norwegian armed forces. In this way, the training becomes a platform for exchanging knowledge that is crucial for the defense of allied countries.

Camp Jomsborg in Poland. Location Strictly Confidential

The construction of Camp Jomsborg, one of the largest Norwegian overseas camps in history, required the clearing of tens of thousands of trees and the involvement of hundreds of Norwegian soldiers. Ultimately, the base is intended to accommodate several hundred Ukrainian trainees at a time, and its construction posed a logistical challenge, requiring Polish permits.

The operation is taking place in the context of a war of attrition, and its aim is, among other things, to solve the logistical problems faced by Ukrainians on the front line. For security reasons, the camp's location is classified, although the command does not consider a direct attack a major threat on NATO territory.
Operation Legio is the first undertaking of its kind in history with Norway in the lead role. Working with soldiers arriving straight from the front gives the training special significance, as emphasized by Norwegian instructors. They know that the skills they pass on have a direct impact on the ability of Ukrainian soldiers to survive when they return to combat.
