Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited the Camp Jomsborg training ground in Poland. Together with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, he met with Ukrainian soldiers being trained before deployment to the front.
The visit took place on February 23 at the base in Lipa, southeastern Poland. At the camp, Ukrainian soldiers undergo training and receive equipment. The training is conducted by instructors from Nordic and Baltic countries. The operation is led by Norway in cooperation with Poland.

Operation Legio under Norwegian Command

Norway leads Operation Legio. The project is carried out jointly with Poland and the Nordic and Baltic states. The goal is to support Ukrainian land forces through training and equipment deliveries. Training began in late summer 2025. Camp Jomsborg was officially opened in October 2025.

In October 2025, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Ukraine signed a cooperation agreement. The document concerns the implementation of Operation Legio. Participating countries provide training, equipment, and expert support. The project aims to build and strengthen Ukrainian brigades according to NATO standards.

Training and Support for Brigades

It was Ukraine that requested support in training and equipping brigades. Norway proposed joint action with regional countries. Poland provided the site for the training base. The training is tailored to current needs reported by Ukraine. Some soldiers arrive at the camp directly from the front.

Last year, Norway allocated about NOK 10 billion to Operation Legio. The support includes equipment donations and purchases from the defense industry. In total, the provided equipment is equivalent to about two brigades. Both enlisted personnel and officers of the Ukrainian army are trained at the base. Norwegian and allied instructors conduct both practical and theoretical classes.

During the visit, the Norwegian and Polish prime ministers also held a bilateral meeting. Discussions focused on defense and energy cooperation. Norway is a key gas supplier to Poland. In 2025, both countries agreed to establish a strategic energy partnership.

On the Norwegian side, the operation involves capabilities within Brigade Nord, including infantry, mechanized units, artillery, engineering, medical services, logistics, as well as command and communications components.
