Volodymyr Z., a Ukrainian national suspected by Germany of involvement in the Nord Stream pipeline explosions, was detained in Poland on September 29, 2025, in Pruszków. The man was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant and was taken for questioning to the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw. The next step may be the initiation of extradition proceedings and the suspect's handover to the German justice system.
The detention of Volodymyr Z. comes in the context of other arrests related to the Nord Stream case, including a recent decision by an Italian court to extradite another suspect, Serhiy K. German law enforcement authorities are consistently pursuing an investigation that links Ukrainian citizens to the organization and execution of the attack on the pipelines at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

Extradition proceedings and further actions by the justice systems aim to clarify the full circumstances and consequences of this complex case, which has attracted widespread attention in Europe for years.

Will Poland Refuse to Extradite the Saboteur?

Volodymyr Z., detained in Pruszków, is a diving instructor, and according to German authorities, he sailed a yacht from Rostock to the Baltic Sea in September 2022, where he placed explosives on the Nord Stream pipelines.

The defense emphasizes that there is currently no certainty about his involvement in the attack, and points out that Nord Stream is owned by the Russian company Gazprom, which, according to the defense, complicates the possibility of bringing charges. Nevertheless, investigators believe the act was a diversion of significant strategic importance.

Taking into account the full-scale war in Ukraine and the fact that Nord Stream is owned by the Russian company Gazprom, which finances these actions, the defense currently sees no possibility of bringing charges against anyone involved in these activities.~ commented to RMF FM Tymoteusz Paprocki, the detainee's attorney.

Did Polish Authorities Refuse to Arrest Volodymyr Z.?

In August, German media reported that Volodymyr Z. had recently been living on the outskirts of Warsaw. Journalists from ARD and the newspapers "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and "Die Zeit" determined that as early as June 2024, the German prosecutor's office had sent a European Arrest Warrant for Volodymyr Z. to Poland, but Polish authorities did not detain him.

Anna Adamiak, spokesperson for the General Prosecutor's Office, explained after these publications that the Polish prosecutor's office first had to confirm the current whereabouts of the wanted man, and in the meantime, Volodymyr Z. left Polish territory.
