A new transmission line across the Sognefjord has started operating. The infrastructure may lead to higher electricity prices in central Norway, even though its purpose is to improve the capacity of the power grid.
According to analyses, the launch of the new transmission line will result in electricity prices in central Norway being about 20 øre higher during the winter. In the southern regions, prices are expected to drop by about two øre, although the effect will be limited due to the small scale of energy flows.
In northern Norway, price changes should be minimal. Experts emphasize that the effects will not be immediate, and prices are unlikely to change overnight.

New Transmission Line in Norway
The reason for the potential price increase in the central part of the country is that, until now, the capacity of connections between regions was limited. The old line over the Sognefjord was a bottleneck for transmitting energy from surplus regions to those with shortages. The new line is intended to enable greater electricity transfers between Central, Western, and Southeastern Norway.
Project analysis assumes that the installation will increase the security of energy supply in Central and Western Norway. However, the transmission system operator admits that prices also depend on many other factors, such as rainfall, wind, production, and consumption.

Electricity Prices in Norway Depend on the Region
Norway is divided into five energy regions, each with different electricity price levels. The north usually has the lowest prices, while the south has higher ones. So far, significant differences have been observed between regions, and the new line is intended to be one of the mechanisms to balance these disparities.
The operator estimates that in the coming years, prices in the southern regions may decrease, especially if energy prices on the European continent fall. Analysts emphasize that although the differences are currently large, similar projects may gradually reduce them.
