On Wednesday, April 16, the heaviest traffic is expected during this year's Easter period. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) urges drivers to get on the road early in the morning or in the evening – not in the middle of the day.
Easter Monday is the day estimated to have the second highest number of road disruptions. According to Statens vegvesen, both on Wednesday and Easter Sunday, the heaviest traffic will occur in the afternoon, between 12:00 and 14:00.
Over the weekend in Eastern Norway, apart from a few stopped cars and obstacles on the road, which necessitated lane closures, traffic flowed smoothly. However, it was heavier than on regular days.
Change of Direction
This year, the Easter period falls relatively late, which means that in the mountains, where Norwegians traditionally spend the holidays with skiing in mind, there is little snow. According to Statens vegvesen, many people are therefore heading to areas closer to the sea for their holidays. This also ensures a greater dispersion of traffic.
Many people use Easter for their first trip of the year with a camper or caravan. Additionally, with rising temperatures and the appearance of spring sunshine, more road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists will appear on the roads.
Weather can also affect the local situation on Norwegian roads. The administration reminds that in mountainous areas, winter conditions still prevail, especially at night, so winter tires are still mandatory.
