A landslide occurred at Carl Berners Square in Oslo. As a result, authorities cordoned off the area and conducted an inspection. Experts say the cause lies in insufficient land protection. For safety reasons, several hundred people were evacuated.
The landslide occurred between residential blocks at Carl Berners Plass. The affected area was estimated to be about 20 meters wide. One parked vehicle was damaged in the incident. Authorities have not reported any injuries. Small earth movements and falling rocks are still being observed in several places.
Response of services and situation of evacuees
Authorities set up barriers and provided round-the-clock supervision of the area. Residents, including those from a student dormitory, were evacuated. The city opened an evacuation center at the Radisson Blu hotel for those needing assistance and accommodation. According to authorities, residents will not be able to return to their buildings in the near future.
A geological engineering expert points out that although the area was partially protected by a rockfall net, this protection did not guard against large rock blocks. In 2021, the Planning and Building Agency (PBE) had already warned about a possible threat in this slope.

It is still dangerous in Oslo
The area around Carl Berners Plass remains closed. Evacuated residents are waiting for the completion of geological surveys. Work to stabilize the slope and remove dangerous rock blocks will begin in the coming days. A return to normal functioning will only be possible after full safety is confirmed.
The main danger is posed by huge rock masses that still "hang" over the built-up area and may fall. The cause of the landslide has not been determined. Factors such as rock saturation or soil erosion are being considered.
