CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Terry Francona doesn't want a ballot. Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza earned their entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame this week, but much of the discussion regarding the process has revolved around players linked to performance-enhancing drugs. "Back some years, I think we were guilty of putting our heads in the sand," Francona said Thursday on a conference call with reporters in advance of the Diamond Resorts Invitational celebrity golf tournament. "I think we're paying for that still. It's unfair to a lot of people, even the writers. "I wouldn't want to be voting now, either. It's tough. You're supposed to be the judge and jury. It's impossible." Some voters have altered their balloting stance toward those with connections to PEDs. Players such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens have received an increased percentage of the vote in recent years, though they remain far from the 75 percent necessary for induction. Francona said he would vote based on the numbers and not the possible manner in which a player may have attained them www.indiansfanshop.com/16-Indians_Nick_Swisher_Jersey . The Tribe manager said those involved in the game "need to find a way, at some point, to get past what happened." "I wish that people could be voted in on what they did in the game and then let the fans determine how they feel about it," Francona said. "I think it's unfair to everybody right now. It's unfair to the players. It's unfair to the people who are voting. It ends up being unfair to everybody. If you think a guy is worthy, vote him in and then let the fans determine how they feel about it Carlos Santana Jersey." Curt Schilling, who played for Francona in Philadelphia from 1998-2000 and in Boston from 2004-07, received a vote on 52.3 percent of the ballots. "I'm certainly very biased," Francona said. "I would hope, on my own personal feelings, that he would get in some day. When you look at the voting -- how much do you put into the postseason? That certainly [would] enhance his candidacy." Schilling was named co-Most Valuable Player of the 2001 World Series while he pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also won a pair of championship rings with the Red Sox. In 19 career postseason starts, Schilling went 11-2 with a 2.23 ERA. Perhaps his most memorable playoff appearance came during the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. Schilling, dealing with an ankle injury, tossed seven innings of one-run ball as blood soaked through his sock and the Red Sox forced a decisive Game 7. "I don't think I ever really thought he wouldn't pitch," Francona said, "and that wasn't fair to him, because he had no business pitching in that game. When I got to see what they did, what he went through to pitch in that game and to not only pitch but be able to pitch well enough to win -- he had no business pitching. "I get so sensitive when people make comments about the bloody sock. He had no business being out there. The way he stayed composed and handled the game under those circumstances, that was one of the most unbelievable performances I've ever seen. It was hard not to be emotional." Musical chairs: With Mike Napoli expected to receive the bulk of the playing time at first base, Carlos Santana could be without a defensive position. He could serve as the club's designated hitter on a regular basis, but Francona isn't ready to relegate him solely to that role. "Carlos can play first, DH and, who knows, he may even be able to play a few more positions," Francona said. "He's played third in the past." Santana opened the 2014 campaign as the Indians' third baseman. That experiment didn't last long. Prior to that, Santana was the starting catcher, until Yan Gomes usurped the role. Santana has played first base for much of the past two seasons. Pitcher pranks: Tom Glavine, also on the conference call with reporters on Thursday, said that when he received the call that notified him of his election to the Hall of Fame in 2014, he was a bit skeptical at first www.indiansfanshop.com/10-Indians_Francisco_Lindor_Jersey . Glavine said he thought Greg Maddux might be pulling a prank on him. Carlos Santana's future and Hall of Fame fallout
