The Norwegian government wants to strengthen cooperation with the European Union in crisis response. Minister of Justice and Public Security Astri Aas-Hansen met in Brussels with EU Commissioner for Crisis Preparedness Hadja Lahbib. The talks focused on expanding joint mechanisms for responding to threats in Europe.
The meeting took place during the Norwegian minister's visit to Brussels. Astri Aas-Hansen emphasized that Norway wants to work even more closely with the EU's developing crisis preparedness system. According to her, Europe's security directly affects Norway's security. The country is closely linked to EU states both economically and geographically, and therefore faces similar threats.
Norway Wants to Participate in the Developing EU System
Norway is already part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The system enables joint responses to disasters and crises. However, the government in Oslo wants to actively participate in its further development. According to the minister, it is important for Norway to be included in new solutions. Otherwise, the country could find itself excluded from some cooperation mechanisms.
This was one of the main topics of the conversation with Hadja Lahbib. The Norwegian minister reported that the EU commissioner responded positively to Oslo’s proposals. Lahbib emphasized Norway’s importance for European energy security. She also highlighted the support the country provides to Ukraine, including the evacuation and treatment of wounded Ukrainian soldiers.

Joint Response to Crises and Disasters
The expanded cooperation is to cover various areas of security. These include the protection of critical infrastructure, evacuation of the population, and military mobility. Readiness of healthcare systems is also an important element. According to Aas-Hansen, the cooperation is mutual. European countries can support each other in crisis situations and during natural disasters.
The minister also pointed to Norway’s experience with the total defense system. The model assumes close cooperation between civil and military structures. She said that this solution has attracted interest from EU institutions. Lahbib reportedly asked about the details of how this system works. Norway believes its experience can inspire other European countries.
