Already at the beginning of December, Oslo authorities announced that the city would have to cut expenses this year. As a result, the traditional New Year's show at Rådhusplassen was canceled. The decision followed last year's attempt to replace fireworks with a light show.
As city council leader Eirik Lae Solberg explained, the new solution did not meet expectations. Therefore, the city has also decided not to organize the event in 2025.
A call to private initiators
At the same time, Solberg encouraged other entities to take the initiative. He pointed out that in many cities around the world, private sponsors or other organizations fund communal New Year's Eve shows. He declared that the Oslo authorities would be open to such a solution. The company Pyroteknikk AS responded to the call and launched a fundraiser on the Spleis platform.

Fundraiser falls short of expectations
Private individuals joined the campaign, including comedian Sigrid Bonde Tusvik, who donated 30,000 NOK. Pyroteknikk AS announced that 490,000 NOK was needed to organize a show at a level similar to previous years. On Friday night, the fundraiser had collected 94,967 NOK. The amount turned out to be insufficient to carry out the event.
As a result, the show was canceled. The information was confirmed by Pyroteknikk AS managing director Madlena Tsvetkova Nielsen. She said the company had hoped for greater involvement from the business sector. All collected funds will be returned to those who supported the fundraiser, in accordance with Spleis platform rules.
