After Princess Mette-Marit's announcement about preparing for a lung transplant, there was a sharp increase in the number of registered donors. The change occurred the day after information about her health condition was revealed.
Data from Helsenorge, the Norwegian state health portal, shows a clear spike in the weekend after December 19.

On Saturday, 930 people registered, and on Sunday, 462. On Monday, this number rose to 1,112. Earlier in December, usually between 50 and 80 people registered daily.

Response from health institutions

The Norwegian Directorate of Health confirms that the increase is unprecedented. Director Cathrine Marie Lofthus reported a significant reaction following Princess Mette-Marit's public statement.

At the same time, interest in the Organ Donation Card app from the Organ Donation Foundation is also rising. The number of app downloads has increased tenfold since Friday. This information was provided by the foundation's head of information, Aleksander Sekowski.

Transplant data in Norway

Minister of Health Jan Christian Vestre pointed out that Norway needs more organ donors. According to the Ministry of Health, about 600 people in Norway are waiting for a new organ.

Data for 2024 shows 105 donations from deceased donors and 393 transplants. Of these, 76 patients received an organ from a living donor.

Norway lags behind other Scandinavian countries when it comes to developing its organ donor base. In 2024, Sweden and Finland performed 24.44 and 26.77 blood donations per million inhabitants, respectively. In Norway, it was 21.51.

Where you can register your donation decision

Registering for an organ donor card also means confirming that your closest relatives have been informed of your decision. This can be done through the Norwegian state health portal or the Organ Donation Foundation app.

Doctors report that a lung transplant is considered in life-threatening situations. Such preparations have been described in the context of Princess Mette-Marit's health condition.
