In 2025, there was an average of 33 house fires per day in Norway. Total losses exceeded NOK 2.8 billion. Costs increased despite a decrease in the number of incidents.
The damage data was published by Finans Norge. The summary is based on home insurance claims. The statistics do not include fires in holiday cottages. The data is commented on by the insurance company Frende Forsikring.

Fewer fires, higher costs

In 2025, there were 12,265 house fires recorded in Norway. This is a decrease of 8.6 percent compared to the previous year. At the same time, total losses increased. The value of reported fire damages exceeded NOK 2.8 billion. This is 5.1 percent more than the previous year.

According to Frende Forsikring, the increase in costs has several causes. When a fire occurs, the damage is often very severe. Fire causes major destruction to structures and furnishings. At the same time, the prices of building materials are rising. The work of specialists is also becoming more expensive.

Most common causes of fires

Most fires start in the kitchen. A common cause is leaving food on a switched-on stove. This leads to so-called dry cooking. The pot or pan overheats and catches fire. Such situations are among the most frequently reported causes of fires.

Other sources of fires include electrical installation failures. Household appliances, such as heaters, dryers, or washing machines, can also pose a risk. Other causes include candles and cigarettes. According to the insurer, many incidents can be prevented with simple habits. Regular checks of equipment and installations reduce the risk of fire.
Experts point out that technical solutions that increase safety are becoming more and more important. In new homes in Norway, it is required to install devices that cut off power to the stove in case of danger. Such systems are also being installed in older buildings during electrical upgrades.
