On 20 October 2026, „National Geographic” magazine published its list of places worth visiting in the coming year. The selection includes 25 destinations across six continents, chosen for their natural attractions, cultural events and new travel opportunities. Norway is represented by Vestland. In Poland’s case, the editors highlighted Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, pointing to their maritime history and developing tourism offer.
Norway on the global list. Vestland stands out for its fjords
Vestland is located in south-western Norway. „National Geographic” describes the region as an area of high cliffs, turquoise waters and waterfalls, offering numerous opportunities to relax in nature. One of its main attractions is Hardangerfjord. Nearby is Folgefonna National Park, home to one of Norway’s largest glaciers, while the famous Trolltunga rock formation lies a little further away. In the north of the region, Nærøyfjord draws attention with its length of more than 16 kilometres.
Bergen is an important point on Vestland’s tourist map. Once a centre of Hanseatic trade, the city has preserved the historic Bryggen district, while its culinary offering includes Gaptrast, a restaurant with two Michelin stars. The region can also be explored from the water. Kayaking trips and cruises on zero-emission electric boats are organised on Nærøyfjord, where visitors can observe seals, porpoises and white-tailed eagles. „National Geographic” also highlights the overnight train connection between Oslo and Bergen, which takes around seven hours and offers passengers reclining seats for resting in a lying position.
Poland also recognised. The Tricity gains international attention
The Tricity is another destination of importance to Polish readers. Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia were recognised for their revitalised waterfront spaces, rich history and growing culinary scene. Particular attention was given to Gdynia. In July 2026, its modernist city centre was inscribed on the World Heritage List, highlighting the importance of the city’s architecture and urban layout from the interwar period. In 2027, Gdynia will also host the main multi-class sailing world championship regattas.
Former shipyard areas play an important role in Gdańsk. Historic halls and warehouses surrounding the Gdańsk Shipyard, linked to the birth of „Solidarity”, have been transformed into galleries, restaurants and cultural spaces. Sopot, in turn, attracts visitors with literary events. „National Geographic” mentions, among others, the Literary Sopot festival, Gdańsk’s St. Dominic’s Fair and Shakespeare Festival, as well as Kolosy, Gdynia’s travel meetings. Separate attention was given to Kashubian cuisine, in which local chefs use Baltic fish, regional products and traditional smoking, marinating and fermentation techniques.
The list of destinations for 2027 also includes places associated with exceptional events. In Luxor, Egypt, on 2 August, visitors will be able to observe a total solar eclipse lasting more than six minutes, while France’s Normandy has planned more than a thousand events to mark the millennium of the birth of William the Conqueror. Other suggestions include Niigata, Japan, with its international art festival, and Chile’s Cape Froward, which is to be incorporated into the Patagonian Route of Parks by the end of 2027.
