What to do in Norway on 6–11 October? Concerts, free outings and Polish flavours

An after-work outing, a coffee meetup, a concert with friends, or something for the kids? From Tuesday, 6 October, to Sunday, 11 October, there is plenty to choose from. Bergen offers activities for young people, Drammen has Oktoberfest, Oslo has cinema and a Polish meal, while children in Trondheim can visit the science centre for free over the weekend.

We have collected suggestions from nine cities, in alphabetical order. There are ideas for a relaxed get-together as well as a louder night out. Each event includes dates and links to the programme or tickets.

Ålesund: a concert before the weekend

Bushman's Revenge at Terminalen – Thursday, 8 October. The Norwegian trio combines the freedom of jazz with the energy of rock. This is a suggestion for those who enjoy guitar-driven music and want to catch live music during the week. Doors open at 20:00, and the concert starts at 21:00. Age limit: 18+. Bergen: something for young people and a meal in the city centre

Today, 6 October: the reopening of Fysak Åsane. The programme includes competitions, activities and participation by Åsane City. Admission is free, and the event is aimed at people aged 10+. Address: Åsane Senter 50B. A good option for parents looking for activities for older children during the autumn break. On Saturday, 10 October: a K-pop course. Fysak Åsane is offering two one-hour sessions to choose from: 12:00–13:00 and 13:00–14:00. There are also tricking courses, a combination of acrobatics, kicks and spins, on Saturday and Sunday, 10–11 October, 10:00–12:00. At Vaskerelven 14, you can try Norwegian home-style cooking: fish gratin, meatballs or lapskaus. On Thursdays, the venue also serves raspeballer, potato dumplings. Drammen: Oktoberfest after work and on Saturday

Oktoberfest at Bragernes Torg – Friday and Saturday, 9–10 October. A heated tent in the city centre, live music, sing-alongs and German sausages. Drop by after work or plan a longer evening with your group.

Fredrikstad: free gatherings for little ones and adults

With a small child: Bokstart at Lisleby samfunnshus – Wednesday, 7 October, 10:00–11:00. Books, stories, music and movement for the youngest children. The Bokstart programme is aimed at children aged 0–3 and their parents. Participation is free, but registration is required in advance. It is an opportunity to get out of the house and spend an hour with other families. Details and registration For adults: Litterært pusterom – Wednesday, 7 October, 18:00–19:30. Litteraturhuset Fredrikstad will host a shared reading session and discussion of texts. You do not need to read anything beforehand or speak up. The organiser provides coffee or tea and light refreshments. The meeting is free, but you need to get a free ticket. Kristiansand: two evenings of heavy music

Southern Discomfort Metal Festival – Friday and Saturday, 9–10 October. The twentieth edition of the festival will take place at Caledonien Hall, Vestre Strandgate 7. Ten bands will perform over two days, including Vintersorg and Kvaen on Friday, and Taake and Imperium Dekadenz on Saturday. Both evenings begin with doors opening at 17:30, and the first concert is scheduled for 18:00. A suggestion for metal fans who want to spend an evening enjoying several concerts under one roof. Oslo: cinema, stand-up in English and a Polish meal

MIRAGE – from Wednesday to Sunday, 7–11 October. The film festival combines screenings with talks and cinema-related events. Screenings take place, among other venues, at Vega Scene at Hausmanns gate 28 and Cinemateket at Dronningens gate 16. A standard ticket for a single screening costs NOK 175, while a festival pass costs NOK 750. You can choose one film for an evening out with friends. English-language stand-up is scheduled at nieu Torshov, Vogts gate 64. The event is listed in the ticket office for 18:30. Stavanger: a festival to end the week

Another Festival at Folken – Saturday and Sunday, 10–11 October. One festival route connects three cities: Aarhus, Gothenburg and Stavanger. The Norwegian part takes place at Folken at Løkkeveien 24. The programme includes Maruja and Shame, among others. It is an idea for those who want to listen to alternative music and discover bands they have not known before. Tromsø: mountains on screen, an industry event and a concert for young people

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour – Tuesday and Wednesday, 6–7 October. At Bryggeriet Scene, there will be two different sets of films about mountains, adventure and outdoor activities: RED on Tuesday and BLUE on Wednesday. You can choose one evening or attend both. Programme and tickets For people working in the electrical industry: EL i Nord – Thursday, 8 October, 10:00–15:00. The trade fair at Fløyahallen, Dramsvegen 206, is aimed at electricians, installers and people working in automation, among others. It is an opportunity to meet suppliers, learn about new solutions and make professional contacts. Admission is free; tickets can be obtained through the organiser's website. Trondheim: puzzles in the crypt and free entry for children

Escape room at Nidarosdomen – available until Sunday, 11 October. In the cathedral crypt, you have to solve a challenge in 30 minutes. A ticket costs NOK 600 for a group of up to six people and also includes admission to Nidarosdomen. With a full group, it works out at NOK 100 per person. The age limit is 8 years, and the activity is conducted in Norwegian. A time slot must be booked; the meeting point is the visitor centre, Besøkssenteret. Times and reservations With children: Vitensenteret – Saturday and Sunday, 10–11 October. The science centre at Kongens gate 1 is open during the school break from 10:00–17:00. The programme includes interactive exhibitions, science shows and activities. This weekend, admission for children is free.
