Weekend in Norway: a concert, pierogi, or an outing with the kids? Ideas for 3–4 October

After a whole week of work, sometimes the hardest thing is deciding what to do with a free Saturday. This weekend, you can choose from free cinema in Bergen, a Polish meal in Oslo, a concert in Stavanger, or an evening with friends at Oktoberfest. We have gathered suggestions from nine cities – in alphabetical order, so you can easily find something close to you.

There are ideas for families, for those who want to dance, and for people for whom a good meal and live music are enough. A weekend plan does not have to be complicated.

Ålesund: Saturday with guitars

Hellbillies at Terminalen Byscene – Saturday, 3 October. A combination of rock, country and Norwegian musical tradition. If you want to spend an evening with guitars and get to know part of the local scene, this concert fits the plan. Doors open at 19:00, and the concert starts at 20:00. The event is for people aged 18+. The organiser indicates that only a small number of tickets remain, so it is worth checking availability before heading out. Tickets and details

Bergen: festival, free cinema and a meal out

For fans of heavier music: Tundra and Lightning. The festival at USF Verftet takes place on 2–3 October. Saturday's programme includes Goat, Green Lung and Death By Unga Bunga, among others. A good choice if you feel like attending several concerts in one evening. Programme and tickets With children: free film at the maritime museum. Bergens Sjøfartsmuseum invites families to screenings at 13:15:
  • Saturday, 3 October: “Ronja Røverdatter”, or “Ronia, the Robber's Daughter”.
  • Sunday, 4 October: “Gubben og Katten, masekråker og bestevenner” – a film from the Pettson and Findus series.
The screening itself is free for adults too. If you are coming only for the film, let the staff know – then you do not need to buy a museum ticket. You may bring snacks and drinks. Before you go, check the film's language version. Screening programme For dinner: Pingvinen, Vaskerelven 14. This is a suggestion for those craving Norwegian home cooking: fish gratin, meatballs or lapskaus, a hearty stew. You can combine dinner with a walk around the city centre or a meeting with friends. Drammen: children create, adults listen, everyone can have something to eat

Free workshops at Drammens Museum – Saturday, 11:00–16:00. The museum at Konnerudgata 7 has prepared creative activities and puzzles indoors and outdoors. Materials are provided by the organiser. It is an easy idea for a family outing without a big budget. Workshop information Live music at Pavarotti – Saturday, 16:00–19:00. S.J. Grooves will play a mix of soul, blues, jazz and pop. You can meet friends over music and return home at a reasonable hour. Admission: NOK 150. Programme and table reservation For lunch or dinner: Drammen Spiser. Until Sunday, 4 October, the “Drammen Spiser i høstferien” food campaign is running. Fredrikstad: an evening with friends at Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest at Phønix – Saturday, 3 October. Bavarian food, live music and dancing. Doors open at 17:00, the band takes the stage at 20:00, and a DJ plays from 23:00. There are two options:

Kristiansand: a heavy concert at Vaktbua

Feral Nature and Vorbid – Saturday, 3 October. The first band combines metal with hardcore punk, while the second leans towards progressive metal. This is a suggestion for people who enjoy loud guitar music. According to the ticket office, doors open at 19:00 and the concert starts at 20:30. An age limit of 18+ applies. Oslo: robots with the kids, pierogi with friends, or a night on the dance floor

For families: robot weekend at Teknisk Museum. “Robothøstferie” runs until Sunday, 4 October. The museum is open 10:00–17:00, and the programme includes sewing robot soft toys, model railways, science shows and LEGO robot programming. Some activities can be joined without registration, while others require signing up at reception. Individual activities have their own age restrictions. Address: Kjelsåsveien 143. Programme, participation rules and tickets Polish food at the table: Polka Shots & Bites. Pierogi, chicken soup or pork cutlet? There is a gastropub serving Polish cuisine at Hausmanns gate 31C. It is a specific place to meet over familiar flavours – also if you want to take Norwegian friends out for a Polish meal. Stavanger: a quieter concert and a Polish meal

Maria Solheim at Spor 5 – Saturday, 3 October, 20:00. The vocalist will perform as a duo with a pianist. Tromsø: a concert in a bar or cheering from the morning

Velcro Dog at Bastard Bar – Saturday, 3 October. The ticket office lists the event as starting at 18:00. It is one idea for a Saturday outing with live music. Programme and tickets For sports fans: Tromsø Backyard Ultra. On Saturday at 09:00, a race in an unusual format starts at TUIL Arena in Tromsdalen: competitors complete a loop of around 6.7 km every hour. Participant places are already sold out, but the organiser expects spectators and people supporting the runners. You can come along, cheer and see what this kind of endurance challenge looks like. Trondheim: Oktoberfest or Saturday in the forest

Oktoberfest at Clarion Hotel Trondheim – Saturday, 3 October. The event runs from 12:00–00:00. The programme includes live music, a DJ, singalongs and German dishes prepared with local ingredients. You can choose an individual ticket or plan an outing for a larger group. Programme and tickets For sport: Trondheim Skogsmaraton. On Saturday, 3 October, a trail race takes place from Granåsen towards Bymarka. The organiser has planned distances of 10.5 km, 21 km and 42 km.
