According to SSB data, the average monthly salary in 2023 was 56,360 NOK, which amounts to approximately 676,000 NOK annually. However, this method of calculation inflates the actual picture of the situation because the average is strongly influenced by individuals with very high earnings. In practice, almost no one receives exactly this amount, and most earn below this level. For this reason, the average salary may seem unrealistically high to many people.

As experts admit, to obtain a more realistic picture of earnings, it is better to use the median, which is the middle value when all salaries are arranged from lowest to highest. In 2023, the monthly median salary in Norway was 50,660 NOK, which is 5,700 NOK lower than the average. The median is less sensitive to extremely high salaries of individual people, making it more accurately reflect the typical level of earnings.

Differences are visible in specific professions

Differences between the median and the average are clearly visible in specific professions. For radiologists, the median and average salaries are almost identical, while among financial brokers, the average significantly exceeds the median due to a small number of very well-paid individuals. Analyzing other indicators, such as quartiles, can more accurately show what salaries are typical in specific professions.
Although the average salary can provide a general insight into earnings, to obtain an accurate picture of the situation, it is also worth analyzing the median and other statistical indicators. This allows for a better understanding of the actual earnings of Norway's residents and making more accurate comparisons between different professions.
