Old wood-burning stove in Norway: How to get a replacement grant?

Replacing an old wood-burning stove can qualify you for several thousand kroner, but not in every municipality and not under the same rules. In Kristiansand, the scheme provides NOK 5,000 for selected parts of the city. In Stavanger, this year's application round has already closed. Before making a purchase, you need to check the conditions for your address, the deadlines and the availability of funds. Simply knowing that the municipality subsidises stove replacements is not enough. The age of the appliance, how it is disposed of, the choice of installer, and even whether the application is submitted before or after the work is completed may matter.

Enova does not subsidise the purchase of a standard wood-burning stove using cleaner combustion technology, known in Norwegian as rentbrennende vedovn. Such appliances are already widely available and are not covered by Enova's standard support. However, some local authorities offer grants for replacements. On your municipality's website, it is worth searching for the terms tilskudd til vedovn, pant vedovn or vrakpant. Be sure to check the date of the information and the current programme rules, not just the amount shown in search results. The rules can vary significantly between municipalities.

In Kristiansand, the programme covers central parts of the Grim, Kvadraturen and Lund districts. The exact area can be checked on a map provided by the municipality. The grant is NOK 5,000 per replaced stove. Support applies to replacing an old appliance without cleaner combustion technology, including a wood-burning stove manufactured before 1998, with a new stove. The programme does not cover, among other things, old cast-iron stoves made before 1940, which may have heritage value. In Kristiansand, the application is submitted after the stove has been replaced. The new appliance must be installed by a qualified installer, and the old one must be delivered to an authorised waste collection point. The application requires, among other things:

• proof of purchase of the new stove,
• confirmation that the old appliance was handed in,
• installation documentation,
• confirmation that the new stove has been registered.

The funding pool is limited. Before starting the work, it is therefore best to check whether the programme still has funds available.

In Stavanger, applications for this year's round could be submitted until 22 May 2026. The programme provided up to NOK 6,000, but no more than 40% of the cost of purchasing and installing the new appliance. The municipality's current information concerns people who submitted an application earlier. The deadline for submitting the documents required for payment is 1 December 2026. It is therefore not a deadline for new applications. The programme covered the replacement of appliances manufactured before 1998 in residential properties. It did not apply to holiday homes. The old stove should be collected by the seller or installer and delivered to the appropriate waste recipient. Taking the appliance to a scrap yard yourself may not meet the programme's requirements.

The year 1998 is an important threshold when assessing older stoves. In June 1998, Norway introduced new emission requirements for wood-fired appliances. Grant schemes therefore often require that the appliance being replaced was manufactured before 1998. First, look for the stove's rating plate. It may be located:

• at the back of the appliance,
• on the side,
• under the heat shield,
• in the lower part of the stove.

The plate may contain the manufacturer's name, model, serial number and year of manufacture. If the markings are illegible or do not include a date, take a photo of the entire stove and the rating plate, then contact the manufacturer or seller. Before applying, it is also advisable to ask the municipality what document it requires to confirm the stove's age.

A study by researchers at NTNU and SINTEF compares three generations of appliances:

• stoves manufactured before 1998,
• stoves from 1998–2016,
• appliances manufactured after 2016.

In the analysis, new stoves had 42% lower climate-impacting emissions than the oldest appliances. Estimated health damage associated with particle emissions was 83% lower compared with the oldest group of stoves. This does not mean that replacing every appliance automatically produces exactly the same result. The stove model, chimney, wood quality and firing method all matter greatly. The latest appliances also make much better use of the energy contained in wood.

This issue is particularly important for people who want to buy a stove in Poland and import it to Norway themselves. The CE marking does not automatically mean that the appliance meets all requirements applicable to using a stove in Norway. Norwegian regulations set requirements for particle emissions from closed wood-burning appliances. The appliance documentation should include information on compliance with the relevant standards, including emission requirements. Before buying, it is worth sending the documentation for the specific model to a Norwegian installer and confirming that the appliance can be legally installed. This is especially important when buying online and importing stoves directly from Poland.

There is no single nationwide grant scheme for standard wood-burning stoves. Individual municipalities decide on support, and programmes may open and close depending on the available budget. Before purchasing, it is best to:

1. go to your municipality's website,
2. search for tilskudd vedovn, pant vedovn or vrakpant,
3. check whether the programme is currently open,
4. check the required age of the old stove,
5. determine whether the application must be submitted before or after the replacement,
6. keep the invoice, installation documentation and confirmation of disposal of the old appliance.

In some municipalities, the order in which these steps are taken determines whether the grant is paid.
