Norway Keeps Up the Pace. Dozens of New Oil Fields for Energy Giants
The Norwegian government is opening new areas for oil and gas exploration. This concerns 70 blocks on the continental shelf. The decision was made as part of the annual TFO licensing round.
On one hand, this guarantees continuity of supply to Europe; on the other, it ensures profits for Norway.

The new areas include the North Sea, Norwegian Sea, and Barents Sea. Oil and gas companies will be able to conduct exploration there. The government emphasizes the importance of the sector for the economy and energy security. The information was announced on Tuesday, May 5.
New Extraction Areas in Norway. Government Decision and Project Scale
A total of 70 exploration blocks have been made available. Most are located in the Barents Sea, where 38 blocks have been designated. There are 10 in the Norwegian Sea and 22 in the North Sea. The areas belong to so-called mature extraction regions.
The TFO round concerns areas located close to existing infrastructure. This means that any discoveries can be developed more quickly. Projects in such locations are usually more profitable and often pay off faster.

The Sector's Importance Is Enormous. Plans and Political Decisions
In justifying its decision, the government points to the role of the oil and gas sector for Norway's economy. It also emphasizes its significance for Europe. The authorities mention job creation and budget revenues, as well as energy security.
At the same time, there will be no new, 26th licensing round in 2026. This round concerns less explored areas. The parliament had previously planned to conduct it at the beginning of 2026. The decision to postpone it had already been announced.
TFO rounds are organized annually and mainly cover proven regions of the shelf. The system is intended to ensure continuity of exploration activities. The new decisions are part of maintaining sector activity while halting expansion into less recognized areas.
