Halloween in Norway: Reflectors should be part of the costume
A reflector on a jacket may be hidden under a cape
A costume worn over everyday clothes can cover items that normally ensure a child is visible. Reflectors should therefore be placed on the outer layer of the outfit.
Trygg Trafikk, a road safety organisation, recommends at least two reflectors, one on each side. Ideally, they should move while walking. They can be hung at knee height or worn as bands around the legs.
A reflector is also useful between well-lit houses. According to the organisation, light from street lamps, shops and other cars does not guarantee that a driver will notice a pedestrian. Trygg Trafikk's recommendations apply both to roads outside towns and to urban streets.
A glowing decoration is no substitute for a reflector
DSB, the agency responsible for public safety and civil protection, advises choosing products marked with CE certification. Reflectors should also include information about the manufacturer or importer. The agency identifies the NS-EN 17353 standard as appropriate for this type of equipment.
If a costume only has decorative light-reflecting elements without such marking, a reflector should be added. DSB clearly stresses that LED accessories do not replace reflectors. The agency's guidance helps distinguish safety equipment from decoration.
Check reflectors from the previous season
DSB suggests a simple test: hang the reflector at eye level and shine a torch on it from a distance of at least 4 metres. The performance of a worn item can be compared with a new one. Safety vests also lose their properties through use and washing.
Drivers should slow down between houses
Before they leave, remind them to use crossings, look around before stepping into the road and stay together. The reflector should remain visible even when a child is carrying a bag full of sweets.
