Artificial intelligence increasingly popular in Norway. The gap between women and men is narrowing
Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining users in Norway. In 2026, 69 percent of residents aged 16 to 79 reported using such tools. Among the youngest respondents, the figure already stands at 9 out of 10 people.

The new data come from a survey on the use of information and communication technologies in households conducted by Statistics Norway (SSB). In 2025, 54 percent of respondents used generative artificial intelligence, while a year later the figure rose to 69 percent. This represents an increase of 15 percentage points. According to data from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), Norway's residents were already the most frequent users of artificial intelligence in Europe in 2025.
Differences between women and men are shrinking. The gap is getting smaller
Men still report using generative artificial intelligence more often. In 2026, 71 percent of men used such tools, compared with 66 percent of women. The difference therefore amounts to 5 percentage points. Just two years earlier, it was more than twice as large.
SSB indicates that in 2024, the difference between women and men was 12 percentage points. In the following years, it began to decline. Erik Fjærli, a section head at SSB, points out that men still remain somewhat more active users of these tools. However, the data for 2026 show a clear convergence in the results for both groups.

Young people use it most often. The oldest are catching up the fastest
The highest share of artificial intelligence users is found among young Norwegians. In the 16 to 24 age group, 9 out of 10 people reported using such tools in 2026. At the same time, growth was recorded in all age groups. In every group below the age of 65, active users already make up the majority.
The largest change, however, occurred among people aged 75 to 79. In this group, the share of generative artificial intelligence users increased by 23 percentage points over the year. Among people aged 35 to 74, the increase ranged from 14 to 19 percentage points. The data therefore show that increased interest in AI tools is not limited to the youngest users.
The SSB data refer to the use of generative artificial intelligence during the three months preceding the interview. The surveys were conducted in the second quarter of each year. This means that the results describe relatively recent user activity, rather than merely earlier exposure to AI tools.
